It’s been a week since my weekend in Montagu, and as I sit here looking through my photos, I can’t help but think that I should have been a farmers daughter. It’s the silence, nature and the simple life that I like. But, it was not meant to be, so the next best thing is escaping the city to enjoy farm life. A farm stay is one of my favourite ways to unplug and relax.
Montagu is a historic town on the R62 in the Western Cape, about 2 and a half hours from Cape Town. The drive there was insanely pretty. The canola was blooming and we drove passed farm after farm of yellow fields.
We stayed in a romantic farm cottage on Badensfontein, a beautiful family-owned farm situated only 5km outside Montagu. The cottage has one bedroom, an open plan living area with a fully fitted kitchen, dining room table, and lounge. I loved the stoep area, where we spent most of our time lounging around chatting, laughing and enjoying the views of the farm. We braai’ed both nights that we were there – because why cook when you can braai!
Saturday morning, I woke up early to the sound of birds, got dressed and took a walk on the farm. It’s my favourite time to explore a new place. It is quiet, the light is amazing and it just gives you time to clear your head.
Once breakfast was done, we drove around Montagu, looking for a spot to enjoy a drink or two and popped in at Route 62 Brewing Company. This one-year-old brewing company is located in a Victorian Building that was built in 1888. The property was developed as the first Post Office of Montagu.
On a personal note:
As you know, in the last couple of years, I have gone through a divorce, I moved cities, adjusted to being a single mom and have come through on the other side. Hooray!
“drink from the well of your self and begin again” Charles Bukowski
Let me tell you, beginning again has been exciting and empowering. One thing my previous relationship has taught me is what I really want: Out of life, relationships and myself. Have you ever had to start over? Let me know in the comments.
