Rosebank Art & Craft Market

Last week I was invited by Hello Joburg Magazine to explore the Rosebank Art & Craft Market. I love Rosebank Mall, it was recently renovated, and have spent many Saturday mornings enjoying coffee at the Woolies, people watching. I have walked passed the Craft Market many times, but have never gone in, so I was very excited to finally have a reason to visit.

According to the Rosebank Art & Craft Market website, the market gives you the “vibrance of a truly African marketplace filled with a warm energy and rhythm.” Just take a walk through the market and you will be greeted by friendly faces, colourful products all accompanied by African music.

Art of Ethiopia

I met with Sharon Nkomo, a Zimbabwean working at the Art of Ethiopia stand. The stand is owned by Mesfin Adera who makes most of the products on the stand.

Sharon is 22 years old and has been working at the market for one and a half years. She helps make the beaded jewellery and fabric bags.

The Art of Ethiopia stand specialises in Ethiopian products: Bead work, hand-made bags, clothing, jewellery, shoes and statues. Everything on the stand is hand-made. All the materials are sourced from Ethiopia.

The stand stocks a very special product: the cross. The Elders used to hold them during their Blessings ceremonies. You will find the cross repeated in patterns on the clothing.

When I asked Sharon what she loves about the market, she replied, “The people are nice, the products are great and sometimes business is good.” Their customers range from foreign tourists, locals and mostly the Johannesburg Ethiopian residents.

After a lovely chat with Sharon, I took a walk through the rest of the market. The people were all friendly and welcoming and very proud of their wares. They offer an assortment of artifacts, beading, wiring, sculptures, gifting options and paintings representative of our African heritage. This is the place you need to visit for authentic African keepsakes.
