On the 1st of July, 27 Boxes opened in Melville and I was so excited to visit this new radical departure from the usual shopping malls. 27 Boxes showcases the best of a shopping centre set in a garden, surrounded by the boheminian suburb that is Melville.
27 Boxes is built entirely from shipping containers, the first of its kind in South Africa. The design combines shipping containers, garden plants and rolling lawns, together with other brick and concrete elements for a richly different look and feel.
When I moved to Johannesburg from Cape Town, we moved straight to Melville. And have not budged since! I love the vibe and sense of community of this bohemian suburb and I thought it couldn’t possibly get any better. But I was wrong!
The design is incredibly unique with spaces outside to compliment the structure. There is also a children’s park, making it a perfect day out with the family.

Krag Drag was one of my favourite spots, they have such quirky and fun clothing that I will definitely be back to buy some baby grows and t-shirts for my boys!
I was so happy to see Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream – this Joburg standard is the most amazing ice cream that I have every had. This hand-made deliciousness comes in a variety of flavours that change daily. So you will have to visit everyday to taste them all! I had the salted caramel and it was delicious!
27 Boxes is definitely a must see, so bring the family, get some great food and do a little bit of shopping!
