Vleidam Guest Farm near Koringberg

Vleidam Guest Farm is a sweet spot located in the heart of Korinberg, in the Swartland area of the Western Cape. In February of this year, I realised that the last road trip I had taken was a full year ago. I went camping in the Cederberg with my father to celebrate my 40th birthday.

2020 did not go as planned. I was supposed to spend my 40th birthday walking the canals of Amsterdam, stuffing my face with stroopwafels. But it was not meant to be. As someone working in the travel industry, I saw the effects of the pandemic happening in real-time. Airlines, hotels, travel agents, owner-run properties – all of them were reporting the same thing. I didn’t book my long-awaited Dutch trip.

So when my 41st birthday came and went, I knew it was time for a road trip. A friend of mine (hey Bron!) recommended Vleidam Guest Farm in Koringberg, and luckily they had space for us over the Easter weekend.

The accommodation consists of 4 historic self-catering cottages built in the 1920s. All four cottages have braai areas, a fireplace, and beautiful views of the Swartland.

There are four things that make Vleidam Guest Farm special:

• The owners are warm and welcoming. They live on the farm and have great tips on what to do in the area.
• Peace and quiet are just what you need after this horrible year. And Vleidam is super peaceful.
• It’s a working farm and there are flocks of gorgeous sheep, chickens, rabbits, geese, turkeys and more. It is perfect for kids!
• The cottages are so lovely, private and comfortable.

We stayed in Cottage 3 with sweeping views of the Swartland. I spent a lot of time on the stoep braaing, reading and watching my boys swim in the pool.

This little getaway for just the thing I needed after this year. It rejuvenated my soul and left me feeling refreshed.

The little town of Koringberg is literally 2 minutes away and is worth a visit, and obviously I looked for the church first!

And, the lovely Desert Rose Farm Stall is the perfect spot to pick up some treats for your stay.
