The Oriental Plaza is located in Fordsburg and is the go-to place for the best samoosa’s in Johannesburg. While technically a mall, it does not resemble the large, popular malls dotted around the city. Each and every store is unique and owned by locals selling fabrics, clothing, decor, spices, food and so much more.
Heather from 2Summers, in conjunction with the Oriental Plaza management, organised an instameet giving participants special permission to photograph the shopping centre. I just have to say that I did spend most of my time browsing and shopping instead of photographing. It is the season to be shopping, and I still had a few more gifts to buy. I found beautiful scarves, Kenyan Kikois and a variety of spices.
In my quest to stay away from the overcrowded malls this festive season, the Oriental Plaza is a great alternative. I suggest spending a couple of hours there, meet the store owners, browse, haggle and you will definitely come home with some unique and affordable products.
The Oriental Plaza stores are open 6 days a week at the following hours:
Monday to Friday: 9am to 5pm
Saturdays: 9am to 3pm
(Please note: selected stores are closed between 12:30pm to 1:30pm on Fridays)
Sundays: Closed
Public Holidays: 9am to 3pm
Address:
38-60 Lilian Ngoyi Street (Note: Bree Street has been renamed to Lilian Ngoyi Street)
Fordsburg, Johannesburg
