I am by no means an adventure seeker, but I do like to get out of my comfort zone every now and then. Just to get the heart racing a little bit. So when the awesome folks at Magaliesberg Canopy Tour invited me to try out their ziplining canopy tour, I jumped at the chance.
The first and only time I did ziplining was at Tzitzikama and it was such a laugh. I cried, screamed and laughed my way through the forest. But that was 10 years ago, and before I had children and before I had a sense of my own mortality.
Located in the heart of the beautiful Magaliesberg mountains, the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is a unique eco-adventure that takes you on a journey through the ecology and geology of the second oldest mountain range in the world – estimated to be 2,400 million years old.
I left early on a Sunday morning and arrived 1.5 hours later where I joined a Dad and his kids, who were celebrating a birthday. I was so glad to be surrounded by youth, they know no fear!
Our tour leader, DVD (yes that’s his name) was a rather funny guy and ran through the safety briefing with us – telling us the do’s and don’t when on the tour. After getting kitted out with our harnesses, helmets and gloves, we piled into the back of a bakkie for a 20-minute drive to the mountain.

The driver dropped us off and we took a leisurely stroll to the first platform. The landscape was so beautiful and green from the recent rains.
When we got to the first platform, I nervously let everyone else go first. The first zip line was so quick, blink and you will miss it. But I must advise you not to blink. Take in the scenery and enjoy the speed at which you fly from one platform to the next.
The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour has 11 zip line platforms, which has been constructed high against the rock faces of the spectacular Ysterhout Kloof – a natural wonderland carved out of the mountainside over millions of years – joined by 10 cabled slides up to 140 metres long and in places 30 metres above the canopy floor. Some of the slides were very high, very fast or very long. So there is a variety of slides, giving you the best, heart-pumping action, all set in a beautiful environment.
This action-packed canopy tour is great for families looking to spend some time doing something exciting in nature, corporate events & teambuilding, birthday parties and maybe even a fun date. They have a variety of packages to choose from.
So what is included in the price? The safety briefing, all equipment, two trained nature guides, transport up and down the mountain, refreshment on tour, light meal at Hadedas Fast Food Restaurant and a certificate acknowledging your bravery!
Tours are conducted 364 days (closed Christmas day) of the year and depart at 30-minute intervals between 06h30 – 16h30 in summer and 07h00 – 15h00 in winter.
