The Extraordinarily Beautiful Table Mountain

I moved to Cape Town when I was 9 years old and since then, Table Mountain has been a constant in my life. I am one of those: “Oh, look at the mountain today!” types of people. I love her when she is cloaked with clouds, or set beautifully against a blue sky. After living in Johannesburg for 5 years, the sight of Table Mountain from the aeroplane window signals home for me, every time.

After 2 days of constant rain, Cape Town was rewarded with a beautiful sunny day and we jumped at the chance to take the trip up Table Mountain. This was my second time going up the mountain with the Cable Car and I was excited to share the experience with my two boys.

The parking at the lower cableway can be a nightmare, so we parked the rental at the Lower Tafelberg bus stop and took the free MyCiti bus up to the lower cableway. When we got to the lower cableway we were met with long queues. Luckily we had our electronic tickets, so there was only one queue for us to wait in.

The ride up is spectacular, and very quick. The floor of the cable car rotates, giving every person a chance to admire the views of the Mother City. My boys loved it! They tried to identify cars, busses, houses until they were as tiny as ants.

Once we arrived at the top, we were greeted with the crispest air, it was slightly cooler up there so I suggest you bring a jacket with just in case the weather turns. The boys and I decided to take a walk along one of the various paths and I stopped to take photos of the Fynbos while the boys climbed huge rocks.

We popped in at the Wi-Fi Lounge for a quick snack and something to drink while I checked my email and social media platforms. The Wi-Fi Lounge is your Table Mountain hotspot for the best free Wi-Fi and delectable treats for sale at the top with views to die for! We sat in one corner where the window looked out onto the spot where the cable car would dock. The boys loved watching the huge cables and wheels turning as the cable car pulled up more people.

In a bid to make Table Mountain accessible to all South Africans, you can receive a free ticket on your birthday! Just bring your South African ID to the lower cableway ticket office. Find out more here.

When we move to Cape Town I am definitely buying a Cable Card. You can enjoy year-round access to Table Mountain, discounts and more!

If you love Table Mountain and use the cable car regularly, sign up for a Cable Card and save! Find out more here.
